Doris Included in Ireland Team While McCarthy Omitted

Ireland rugby team announcement news

Returning head coach Andy Farrell has named captain Caelan Doris in his Irish squad for the fall matches, however lock McCarthy has been excluded.

Doris, absent from play since undergoing shoulder surgery in the start of May, recently returned to provincial training, with doubts lingering whether he will be ready to face New Zealand in Chicago on 1 November.

Lock Joe McCarthy, however, was not considered after not recovering from the foot issue he sustained during the first Lions match against the Wallabies in the summer.

Ulster forward Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province winger Nash are also absent due to injury, while number 15 Keenan was previously excluded after having hip surgery after the summer tour.

Dublin province prop Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the sole uncapped member in the 34-man group, however Irish rugby authorities says new Munster pair Edwin Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and once-capped western province wing Bolton will head to Chicago as "reserves".

Following playing the New Zealand at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their previous encounter, Ireland will play Japan, Australia and world champions South Africa in Dublin.

"There's an exciting look to the squad and there's an opportunity for the veteran members and for those who made their debuts on the summer tour to the Lelos and Portugal," said Farrell, back to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to lead the Lions tour to Australia.

In a mostly familiar-looking selection, the Dublin club's Prendergast and Munster's Crowley will again vie for the first-choice number 10 position. The fly-half role is still available, with the two players poised to play against each other for the first occasion in the upcoming United Rugby Championship match at the Dublin venue.

Frawley is the third number 10 chosen as Farrell opting against calling up Leinster's Harry Byrne.

At scrum-half, the Ireland boss has selected British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained the national side to the summer international wins over Georgia and Portugal. Additionally, there is a return for the western province's Blade, chosen to teammate Murphy.

Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey represent an veteran cohort of midfield options. Osborne is another option in the midfield, though the youngster is also a leading candidate to deputise for the full-back at full-back.

Outside backs Lowe, Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are included. O'Brien impressed on his national team debut during the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over the Lelos and the Lobos.

McCarthy is the sole fresh addition in the Ireland pack. The loose-head prop has been in a couple of his province's three league games so far and played in the second string's defeat by England in the English city previously.

McCarthy was selected in interim boss Paul O'Connell's summer squad, but did not receive a international appearance.

Munster lock Ahern, who earned his debut appearances in those matches, is retained, while experienced Northern province lock Henderson returns after missing the summer matches.

Jack Conan, who started each of the Lions Tests during the tour, is set to deputise for the captain if the captain fails to recover fitness soon enough to face New Zealand.

The Ireland squad will assemble in the capital on Monday before flying to the US on Tuesday.
